What is a hair scrub and why we need it?

We all know the importance of scrubbing when it comes to skincare but when it comes to hair all we do is slather on products to make them bouncy and shiny, oil to treat and shampoo to get rid of all the dirt and grime. What we forget is that the skin on our scalp too needs a proper cleanse, moisturize and EXFOLIATING system to stay healthy. Dirt, oil, and product buildup are not exclusive to our strands they are equally damaging for our scalp.

This is where hair/scalp scrub steps in. These products are designed to stimulate circulation, get rid of pore-clogging product buildup, dirt, oil and dead skin cells from our scalp and thus help to deal with various hair issues like dandruff, dryness, and hair thinning.

How do I use a hair scrub?

Don’t get overenthusiastic and stick to once a week or two-week application. I like scrubbing my scalp bi-weekly. Now, some scrubs like this one from The Body Shop can be used in place of your regular shampoo while there are few that are used as pre-shampoo treatment. After the cleansing routine, I follow up with my conditioner- the strength of which depends on the type of product I have used.

The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Cleansing Hair Scrub Review

To be brutally honest I haven’t, in all these years, tried anything from The Body Shop haircare range except for the ginger shampoo. All I have ever loved and constantly repurchased are their face mask… I have tried almost all the face mask they have ever offered and that day too I went into the store to get my beloved honey mask from them.

But like a true beauty addict, I wandered through the store…sniffing things that seemed new to me and that is when I came across this hidden gem from their haircare line. The scent knocked me out completely…It has gripped me to a point where I just cannot walk out of my shower without sniffing it a couple of times, even today after almost 10 days of buying it.. and I am not making it up..go smell this stuff yourself and I bet you won’t be able to resist it.

Why I love The Bodyshop Fuji Green Tea Cleansing Hairscrub?

Ingredients are my main point of concern whenever I pick any product for myself. The Bodyshop Fuji Green Tea Cleansing Hairscrub has a pretty condensed list of ingredients which is always a good thing as the fewer thing in a product mean fewer chances of it causing any irritation to anyone. The few that really caught my attention were:

Key Ingredients:

Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract: Also known as Green tea extracts. This scrub is enriched with Japanese green tea extracts which have significantly well-researched anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and UV protectant properties.

Honey:Ethically-sourced Ethiopian honey comes from the nectar of wildflowers found in Ethiopian Afromontane rainforests. Needless to say, it is collected in the most natural way, without harming nature and bees. This moisture-boosting ingredient has well known soothing, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal powers.

Menthol:Provides a cooling sensation that is very uplifting and refreshing. People with very sensitive scalp should do a patch test first before applying products with menthol as for some it could be quite sensitizing.

This product contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) which is basically a surfactant/cleansing agent which is added to give a product an even and easy spreadability and nice bubbles. SLES is not as potent and irritating as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). I personally do not have any issues with SLES but there are people who like to keep away from these two ingredients. Just throwing it out there for the concerned.

The Bodyshop Fuji Green Tea Cleansing Hairscrub is 100% vegetarian and formulated without silicones.

Consistency and Scent: This invigorating scrub shampoo reminds me a lot about Lush Big Shampoo. Both have a similar look and feel. When Lush discontinued its services in India years back, I was really heartbroken as they had some of my very favourite hair and body products. The void created by Lush has now been fulfilled by the body shop. And my happiness knows no bounds. The scent is my favourite part, the best one ever done by the body shop in my opinion.

Use, Experience, and Effects:

• You do not require a substantial amount of this product (though you will be tempted to). I have pretty loonngg hair and two tablespoons work for me just fine. The instruction says to mix the scrub with little water and then massage it in. I do not like mixing it, instead, I spread little quantities in random sections of my wet hair and once I have covered the entire scalp I massage my scalp gently. It lathers just like a regular shampoo. Once I am done massaging I like to leave it on for about 3-4 minutes and then rinse it off.

• The product is unexpectedly easy to spread on the scalp & hair. It washes off absolutely clean (with no scrubby grains left behind) and easily too. When I used it for the first time, I was prepared to go with a second cleanse, with a mild shampoo, to get rid of all the graininess. But, to my surprise, I was spared from that tedious task. The scrub had washed out just like my regular shampoo without leaving any gritty feeling.

• The salt crystals are very finely milled. The non-abrasive texture is apt for sensitive scalps as well. It did not leave me with a dry, itchy scalp. Also, some scalp scrubs tend to increase the problem of frizz, it, however, did not do so.

• The shampoo is very effective is getting rid of all the impurities and gunk form hair and scalp in one go. Every time I use it my hair feels squeaky clean (not in an unpleasant way though), healthy and bouncy. It adds softness to them as well. I felt the difference after just one use.

• I just love the cooling sensation it provides.

Always remember to:

1. Go gently with exfoliation. Do not test your might while exfoliation if you want to stay clear from skin abrasions.
2. Do not over-exfoliate. Depending upon your scalp condition stick to once or twice application. Over exfoliation is as harmful to our skin as under exfoliation. It makes our skin irritated and more susceptible to infections.
3. Look for products that do not include harsh crystallized ingredients.

Who may and may not like it?

Like: Anyone looking for an effective hair scrub that can stimulate blood flow and whisk away impurities caused by pollution, oil and styling products would definitely keep it stocked. Not to forget its easy access and cost-effectiveness will also help in making a positive decision making.

Not Like: People who have problems with SLES and menthol may not want to go for it.

The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Cleansing Hair Scrub retails for Rs 1995 for 352g of product.
