Hôm nay chúng ta sẽ bắt đầu với bài số 6 trong loạt bài học 25 Bài thành ngữ tiếng Anh giao tiếp hàng ngày 2019.

Các cụm từ này đều là những cụm từ cực kỳ phổ biến trong cuộc trò chuyện hàng ngày ở The United States of American (USA) hoặc United Kingdom (UK). Mọi người sẽ nghe thấy chúng trong các bộ phim và chương trình TV và có thể sử dụng chúng để làm cho tiếng Anh của mình giống với tiếng của người bản ngữ hơn.

Lesson 6: Susan stays home and bakes cookies

Susan decides to cheer up her husband. Bob loves her homemade cookies. Nicole suggests she start a cookie business.

Susan:    Bob, I baked cookies for you.

Bob:       That was so nice of you, dear. You’ve got a heart of gold!

Susan:    Go ahead and pig out!

Bob:        These are delicious!

Susan:    I thought they might cheer you up. You’ve been in a bad  mood lately.

Bob:        I guess I have been a little on edge. But these cookies are just what the doctor ordered!

Nicole:   Do I smell cookies?

Susan:    Yes, Nicole. Help yourself.

Nicole:   Yum-yum.* These are out of this world. You could go into business selling these!

Bob:       You could call them Susan’s Scrumptious Cookies. You’d make a bundle.

Susan:    Good thinking!

Nicole:   Don’t forget to give me credit for the idea after you’re rich and famous!

Susan:    You know I always give credit where credit is due!

Ý nghĩa các thành ngữ tiếng Anh giao tiếp hàng ngày trong bài

1. Câu thành ngữ số 1: cheer someone up

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: make someone happy

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: Làm cho ai đó vui

Ví dụ 1:   Susan called her friend in the hospital to cheer her up.

Ví dụ 2:  My father has been depressed for weeks now. I don’t know what to do to cheer him up.

Chú ý:  Bạn cũng có thể nói “Cheer up!” với ai đó, nếu họ đang cảm thấy buồn.

2. Câu thành ngữ số 2: give (someone) credit

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to acknowledge someone’s contribution; to recognize a positive trait in someone

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: công nhận ai đó, ghi nhận đóng góp của ai đó

Ví dụ 1:   The scientist gave his assistant credit for the discovery.

Ví dụ 2:  I can’t believe you asked your boss for a raise when your company is doing so poorly. I must give you credit for your courage!

3. Câu thành ngữ số 3: give credit where credit is due

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to give thanks or acknowledgement  to the person who deserves it

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: ghi nhận công lao cho người xứng đáng

Ví dụ :  I will be sure to thank you when I give my speech. I always give credit where credit is due.

4. Câu thành ngữ số 4: go into business

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to start a business

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: bắt đầu kinh doanh

Ví dụ 1:  Jeff decided to go into business selling baseball cards.

Ví dụ 2:  Eva went into business selling her homemade muffins.

5. Câu thành ngữ số 5: good thinking

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: good idea; smart planning

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: đúng đấy

Ví dụ 1:   I’m glad you brought an umbrella – that was good thinking!

Ví dụ 2:  You reserved our movie tickets over the Internet? Good thinking!

6. Câu thành ngữ số 6: have a heart of gold

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to be very kind and giving

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: rất tử tế, tốt bụng

Ví dụ 1:  Alexander has a heart of gold and always thinks of others before himself.

Ví dụ 2:  You adopted five children from a Romanian orphanage? You‘ve got a heart of gold!

7. Câu thành ngữ số 7: Help yourself

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: serve yourself

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: tự phục vụ, tự nhiên làm gì đó

Ví dụ 1:  “Help yourselves to cookies and coffee,” said Maria before the meeting started.

Ví dụ 2:  You don’t need to wait for me to offer you something. Please just help yourself to whatever you want.

8. Câu thành ngữ số 8: (to be) in a bad mood

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: unhappy;  depressed;  irritable

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: buồn, bực tức

Ví dụ 1:  After her boyfriend broke up with her, Nicole was in a bad mood for several days.

Ví dụ 2:  I don’t like to see you in a bad mood. How can I cheer you up?

9. Câu thành ngữ số 9: just what the doctor ordered

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: exactly what was needed

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: chính xác là như vậy, chính xác là những gì cần thiết

Ví dụ 1:   Martin wanted a hot drink after spending the day skiing. A cup of hot cocoa was just what the doctor ordered.

Ví dụ 2:  Our trip to Florida was so relaxing. It was just what the doctor ordered!

10. Câu thành ngữ số 10: (to) make a bundle

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to make a lot of money

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: kiếm được nhiều tiền

Ví dụ 1:   Bob’s friend Charles made a bundle in the stock market and retired at age 45.

Ví dụ 2:  Sara made a bundle selling her old fur coats on eBay, a website where you can buy and sell used things.

11. Câu thành ngữ số 11: (to be) on edge

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: nervous;  irritable

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: căng thẳng, buồn chán

Ví dụ 1:  Whenever  Susan feels on edge, she takes several deep breaths and starts to feel more relaxed.

Ví dụ 2:  Ever since his car accident, Neil has felt on edge.

12. Câu thành ngữ số 12: out of this world

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: delicious

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: rất ngon, ngon tuyệt

Ví dụ 1:  Mrs. Field’s oatmeal raisin cookies are out of this world!

Ví dụ 2:  Mmmm, I love your chicken soup. It’s out of this world!

13. Câu thành ngữ số 13: pig out

– Nghĩa tiếng Anh: to eat greedily; to stuff oneself

– Nghĩa tiếng Việt: ăn rất nhiều

Ví dụ 1:   Ted pigged out on hot dogs and hamburgers at the barbeque and then got a stomachache.

Ví dụ 2:  “Nicole, stop pigging out on cookies or you’ll never be able to eat your dinner!”
