• An eye for an eye: said to show that you believe if someone does something wrong, that person should be punished by having the same thing done to them: có ý nói nếu một người làm một chuyện gì đó xấu/sai trái thì phải nhận quả báo tương tự; ăn miếng trả miếng; thường đi chung là An eye for an eye (and a tooth for a tooth)

Bob was going to retire from teaching in June, and the foreign language department was planning on presenting him with some luggage at his retirement dinner. Moving to a new city can be a lonely experience. When I first moved to Los Angeles, I didn’t know anyone and it was hard to strike up new friendships. I’m a pretty sociable person, but it’s still hard meeting new people and even harder to make lasting friendships.

I’ve never been a lone wolf, so being in a new city out on my own was a new experience. Sometimes I liked doing solitary things, but after awhile, I yearned to be around other people. I would go to busy places to people-watch. I would see families walking by, groups of friends hanging out together, and couples arm-in-arm, and wished I was walking along with them. When you’re feeling lonely, it sometimes feels like there’s a wall between you and everyone else, a wall that’s not easy to break down.

Slowly, I started to meet people at my new job and to see them outside of work. Having this companionship and camaraderie, especially with people I had a good rapport with, was a welcomed change. In time, I made some good friends and I no longer dreaded the weekends. But, I’ve never forgotten how hard it was in those first months to be a stranger in a new place!

A SLAP ON THE WRIST – EAT CROW – SHORT CIRCUIT

1. A slap on the wrist: sự trừng phạt nhẹ nhàng

2. Eat crow. rút lại lời tuyên bố (nghĩa đen là ăn thịt con quạ)

Sự tích về Eat Crow: Ngày xưa có người than phiền với một ông chủ quán là thức ăn trong quán ông ta dở quá. Ông ta bèn trả lời rằng tại khách hàng khó tính chứ chính ông ta ăn cái gì cũng thấy ngon cả. Bạn bè ông ta bèn quay một con quạ đen và đưa cho ông ta ăn. Thịt quạ rất dai và dở nhưng ông ta vẫn phải ăn vì sợ mất mặt. Từ đó có thành ngữ Eat Crow tức là phải rút lại những gì mình đã nói.

Ex: Honey, you know how Larry always brags about what a great player he is and how he can beat anybody around. Well, today I beat him 3 straight sets and really made him eat crow.

Vietnamese Version: Đoạn này có nghĩa như sau: Em ơi, em biết là anh chàng Larry lúc nào cũng khoe khoang rằng anh ta là một cây vợt đại tài và có thể đánh bại được mọi người. Hôm nay, anh đã thắng được anh ta 3 ván liền và làm cho anh ta phải xấu hổ mà rút lại lời nói khoe khoang của mình.

3. To short circuit: là phá hỏng một điều gì

Explanation: To Short Circuit là cắt đứt một mạch điện, và nghĩa bóng là phá hỏng một điều gì.

Ex: My mother stayed up all night cooking for all our relatives and friends. But when the day came, a terrible thunderstorm short circuited all our plans and we had to eat inside the house.

Vietnamese Version: Câu này có nghĩa như sau: Mẹ tôi đã thức suốt đêm để nấu nướng cho tất cả bà con và bè bạn trong dịp lễ. Nhưng tới ngày lễ, một trận mưa giông đã phá hỏng dự định của gia đình tôi, và chúng tôi phải ăn uống trong nhà.

THE BIGGER THEY ARE, THE HARDER THEY FALL

The bigger they are, the harder they fall means that bigger people are harder to knock down, but when they go down they hit the ground harder. You can say this to encourage a smaller competitor. Example: “Good luck, and remember: The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”
